WHAT IS SMART ON FHIR?

The healthcare standard for apps inside the EHR

SMART on FHIR is the healthcare industry's standard for letting apps securely connect to data inside EHRs. It pairs HL7 FHIR — the data model and REST API for records like Patient, Encounter, and Observation — with a profile of OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect for authorization, so an app can launch in the context of the current patient and access only the minimum necessary data.

  • Interoperable

One integration works across any SMART on FHIR–enabled EHR, not just one vendor.
  • Secure by design

Least-privilege scopes, auditable consent, and OAuth/OIDC authorization.
  • In-context

The app already knows which patient and encounter the clinician is viewing.

WHY IT MATTERS

No more leaving the EHR to coordinate care

Historically, scheduling transport, home health, or equipment meant leaving the EHR — phone calls, faxes, broker portals, and copy-pasting patient data between systems. SMART on FHIR removes that gap. VectorCare is the first and only patient logistics platform that runs on SMART on FHIR, so case managers never leave Epic to schedule NEMT, DME, or home health.
